This was one vacation we'd
been looking forward to from a long time. I had had a tiring
semester and Raj was exhausted with all the work and we really
needed a break.
We chose a place called
Jekyll Island that is about 4.5 hours from Atlanta. This is
a small island with 10 miles of beach. It used to be a private
island owned by the rich and famous like Rockefeller, Goodyear,
Macy and others. It's also the island where the policies of
the Federal Reserve Bank wereformed when the wealthy met there
on "their" vacations. Among the many places that
I'd looked into to book our vacation, this was recommended
as being a nice relaxing place.
We drove down on Friday
morning. The weather has been so bad this month- it's rained
almost everyday, we were hoping to get a bit of sun on our
vacation. When we reached there at about 4pm, we checked in
and hit the swimming pool since it was high tide for the beach.
The resort had live music in the night and it was great going
back for a swim in moonlight after dinner. We had a marvelous
time at the beach in low tide the next day morning and got
all tanned. Luckily, the temperature wasn't that hot that we'd
be sun burnt. That evening we went on a dinner cruise on an
entertainment ship. It reminded us of our cruise in the Kerala
houseboaton our honeymoon.
The next morning (Sunday),
we rented bicycles and went biking around the island. We biked
along for 3 hours and more than 20 miles all the way around
the island. Boy! That was tiring. But the island itself is
very pretty so we didn't mind it. That evening we played a
couple of rounds of miniature golf (since it was Raj's birthday,
I let him win :-)) and walked for miles along seashore in the
setting sun - relaxing, feeling a little bad that we had to
leave the next day.
On Monday, we checked out
of the hotel early and headed back home stopping on route at
a city called Savannah. This was the first city in Georgia
and dates back to the 1776 American Revolution. We walked around
the city and visited a couple of civil war forts nearby there.
We finally got back home at 8pm after a great time.
